Our Story

In 1914, Joel Russ began selling herring from a pushcart on the Lower East Side. A century and four generations later, Russ & Daughters is still in the same neighborhood, still hand-slicing lox, and still welcoming customers the same way — with generosity, knowledge, and the best appetizing in New York.

What began as a modest storefront became a New York institution. The appetizing tradition — smoked fish, bagels, cream cheese, caviar, herring, and baked goods — is the thread that connects everything we do: the shop, the café, our catering, and the packages we ship across the country.

We believe great food is meant to be shared. Whether you're picking up bagels for Sunday morning, planning a holiday spread for thirty, or sending a gift to someone you miss, we're here to help you do it well.
